About the Work:
This piece came after the tragic passing of Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gigi. Kobe was my idol.
When I was working on my first orchestral commission in 2019, I stayed up late watching his highlights
to inspire me and keep me going. I adapted the motto “Kobe in the finals” to remind myself that when
things were the toughest, that’s when hard work really counts. Without ever meeting him, he helped
me to finish my degree, and many other milestones in life.
When he died, it was hard on the world. After some painful time, I came to the realization that
he did the absolute most that he could with the life God gave him. And in the end, that is all that one
could hope for. I found some peace in that. Gigi, on the other hand, was so young and still had so much
life to live. To this day, I haven’t been able to fully process that tragedy. This piece is my response.
